Popis: Many roads in Papua New Guinea and other tropical developing countries are constructed using an unbound granular base with a thin sealing coat. Road Note 31, which is generally used for the design of road pavements, ignores the effect of horizontal loading applied to the pavement surface as a consequence of acceleration and deceleration, yet observations show that these forces, in combination with vertical wheel loads, are a major contributor to failure. The criterion for failure for roads of this type, as specified in Road Note 31, is translated in terms of the attainment of a certain level of maximum principal strain. Using established solutions for the separate load cases applied to an elastic, cross-anisotropic half-space, the ratio of maximum principal strains for vertical and combined loading is determined. This ratio is used to obtain improved estimates of the reduced lives of roads at bus stops, intersections, bends and traffic circles, where significant acceleration or deceleration occurs. (A)
