This short article is a discussion on "Theoretical Evaluation of the Transient Response of Constant Head and Constant Flow-Rate Permeability Tests" by M. Zhang, M. Takahashi, R. H. Morin, and T. Esaki. The authors of this discussion state that while assumptions of constant specific storage, constant system storage capacity, and constant specimen dimensions are likely to be acceptable for most materials under typical testing conditions, the assumption of constant hydraulic conductivity (HC) may not be acceptable. HC is sensitive to changes in void ratio and, depending on the compressibility of the medium and the imposed stress conditions, may vary considerably over the height of a specimen at steady state. The response of two of the authors of the original article is included. |
