Popis: Background: Handgrip strength has been linked to risk of adverse physical and mental health outcomes, however, the association between handgrip strength and depressive symptoms is still controversial. We aimed to investigate the association between handgrip strength and depressive symptoms in a prospective study and meta-analysis. Methods: We analyzed the data from 6,392 Chinese adult participants ≥ 45 years old enrolled in the CHARLS (Chinese Health and Retirement Prospective Cohort Study) at 2011-2015. The handgrip strength was measured by a dynamometer, and depression symptoms were determined using the 10-item version of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale. We further examined this association, combining CHARLS data with data from five prospective studies in a meta-analysis. Findings: During a follow-up of 3.7 years, 1,055(16.5%) participants experienced depression symptoms. The incidence of depressive symptoms was significantly higher in population with lower handgrip strength, and was 11.9%, 15.5%, and 22.1% in strong, moderate, and weak handgrip strength group (tertiles), respectively. The participants with strong handgrip strength had significantly lower risk of depressive symptoms than those with weak handgrip strength (P for trend
