Popis: Objective: to describe the mortality profile due to traffic accidents of elderly residents in the Federal District (DF), Brazil, in the period of 2011-2015. Method: an observational, cross-sectional study, with data obtained from cadaveric reports from the Institute of Legal Medicine (IML) of the Federal District and Police Occurrences. The data analysis was done through descriptive statistics, with investigation of associations between variables by means of the Chi-square statistical test. Results: a total of 249 fatal traffic accidents were reported in the elderly, with a predominance of men (71.8%), 60-69 years (45%), married (44.2%), previous alcohol consumption in 13.3% of cases. There was a greater frequency of events on Mondays (17.3%), in the morning (33.3%), and during August (11.2%). The trampling was the most observed trauma, reaching the percentage of 39% for cars and 12.9% for motorcycles. Trauma in elderly cyclists was exclusively male (10.4% of total accidents), and elderly car occupants were victims of collisions with other cars or vans in 12% of traffic accidents. The association of the marital status with the sex and of the age group with the sex was observed in the fatal traffic accidents of the elderly. Conclusion: based on the epidemiological profile of traffic accidents in the elderly and the perspective of population increase of that age group, it is evident the need to improve the roads and signaling, traffic control and education, in order to reduce mortality population.
