Temperature dependence of surface conductance and a model of vicinal (interfacial) water

Popis: Data are reported for the temperature dependence of the total conductivity of aqueous solutions in Pyrex capillaries of varying diameter (ranging from 5–2000 μm). From these data the contribution due to surface conductance has been extracted and the total conductances of the capillaries have been analyzed in terms of a model consisting of water with bulk-like attributes and a region of differently structured water near the interface. The model treatment provides estimates of the thickness of the vicinal, locally structured water at the solution/glass interface. The thickness of the modified water layers appears to range from 0.05 to 0.2 μm.
