In this study, micron-size monodisperse PS PA beads were prepared by a two-step polymerization for biomedical applications. First, monodisperse polystyrene particles (1–6 μm) were prepared by a phase inversion polymerization. By coaxial polymerization of styrene and the acrylic co-monomers (i.e. DMAEMA, AA and HEMA), these particles were then coated with three different polymeric layers. These particles were tested in a case study, in which the GIT transit time and morphology were investigated. The particles with amino groups obtained by the method given above were labelled with 99mTc. Adult Chinchilla rabbits were used as test animals. A sample of 99mTc particles (37 Mbq) in 1 ml of emulsion were given orally. Whole body scintigrams were obtained. Consenting human adult volunteers and patients were also included in the study. The patients were given orally 100 ml of water containing 74 Mbq 99mTc. Abdominal and whole body images at certain intervals up to 48 h were recorded. This case study concludes the feasibility of using micron-size monodisperse PS PA particles as a new carrier matrix to study the colon transit time and morphology. |
