With the increasing share of fluctuating renewable energy sources, such as wind power and solar cells, demands for energy storage and load leveling in the electric grid are expanding. For this purpose, hydroelectric and thermal power generations are used. In Germany, however, for reducing greenhouse gases, development of second-generation compressed air energy storage (CAES) has been advanced to replace thermal power generation. Another type of CAES called advanced humid air gas turbine (AHAT), which uses moist air as compressed gas, is being researched in Japan. In 2013, 40-MW integral experimental equipment was constructed and technical data are now being collected. |
