Popis: As a new teacher placed in urban schools and assigned to co-choreograph Aboriginal student dance troupes, I found myself challenged by teacher’s comments and questions about the troupes’ merit and validity. These challenges brought me to my research and the following question arose, “What is the significance of song and drum in schools?” Drawing from Elders teachings, archives, and literature I inquired into the traditional practice of song and drum and its significance in different communities. My inquiry affirmed that the investment of time with students was worthwhile. Navigating the western education system presents challenges to Aboriginal teachers’ initiatives as additional effort is made to engage students in ceremony and experiences grounded in their culture.
