The paper deals with an epidemiological compartmental model to describe cancer dynamics in a given population. Three methods including Kaplan-Meier algorithm and Weibull and exponential distribution fitting were used for estimation of the mean survival time for four TNM stages of prostate cancer described by the 1977-2007 data from the National Oncological Register of the Czech Republic. In comparison to Kaplan-Meier estimation both the distribution fitting methods resulted in overestimated length of probable survival. However, such overestimation can be corrected using demography mortality data. |
