Kinetic energy of fragments and energy balance in the fission of U235 by thermal neutrons

Popis: The distribution of the total kinetic energy of additional fragments as a function of their mass ratio is measured with a gas ionization chamber. The difference between the average kinetic energies in symmetrical fission and the fission in which the heavy fragment is “magic” (MT = 130 to 132) is found to be 21 MeV. The maximum-minimum ratio for the yield curve of (final) fragments in symmetrical fission was 500 : 1 in these measurements. The total energy yield found by experimental data is in good agreement with predictions by the semi-empirical Weizsacker formula everywhere except in the strongly asymmetrical fission region.
