Popis: | Water, sediment and macrobenthic invertebrates were sampled at Ignacio Ramirez dam (IRD) in Mexico, aimed to determine whether the insecticide Methyl parathion (MP) is concentrated. We investigated how factors like low pH or high turbidity, may prevent its degradation and favor the accumulation in water, sediment and organisms, and/or produce a toxic effect in fresh‐water organisms. MP and 4‐nitrophenol (4‐NP) are accumulated in water, sediment and benthic organisms. During the dry season MP can be degraded and the metabolite can be eliminated from the sediment during the rainy season. MP and 4‐NP concentrations show a negative correlation with pH in sediment and a positive correlation with depth of the aphotic zone. This factors are largely correlated with accumulation and persistence of MP and 4‐NP in sediment. Sediment of IRD shows a sublethal and genotoxic effects in bioindicators. MP and 4‐NP concentrations in water and sediment have a direct effect in the diversity of macrobenthic communities. |
