Popis: Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States, accounting for about one in four deaths with coronary heart disease (CHD) being responsible for over a third of a million deaths per year. While physical inactivity has been reported as a leading cause of cardiovascular disease in the United States, only about 20% of adults meet the minimum aerobic physical activity guidelines. This coupled with the consumption of high-caloric and dense fatty diets and sugary juices and soda has resulted in increase in obesity and related metabolic syndrome and ardent risk factors of heart diseases. In this chapter, we provide an overview of obesity and associated conditions and examined the cross-sectional distribution and correlates of major cardiovascular disease risk factors. In addition, we report the effect of preventive measures including physical activity and low-salt, low-fat diet on coronary heart disease risk reduction in a high-risk population.
