Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the western world. One of the most common causes of stroke is atherosclerotic cerebrovascular disease. The treatment of choice has traditionally been surgical endarterectomy or bybass to restore the cerebral circulation. Those patients at high surgical risk or with surgically inaccessible lesions require an alternative procedure. Over the past several years, percutaneous angioplasty methods have been attempted; however, the potential for dislodging the thrombus and plaque to the distal cerebral circulation has blocked the progress of this nonsurgical intervention. Recently, an IVT atherectomy catheter with a suction device for removal of debris during the cutting of the atheroma, has been developed. We produced and treated an animal model with carotid stenosis with the atherectomy device to determine the safety and feasibility of using it in the treatment of carotid stenosis. |
