Popis: | The purpose of this paper is to present a fundamental bioacoustic interpretation of the isolume model [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 62, S1(A) (1977) CC10] which clarifies the physical significance of model parameters and defines the bioacoustic conditions under which the model can provide an effective analytical representation of the scattering strength profile S(z;F) of a light‐sensitive biological scattering layer. The physical basis for the interpretation is the discovery that nightcatch density profiles nb(z) of air‐bladdered fish measured at Ocean Acre can be described by the theoretical profile functions n(z) of the model. Analysis shows that a model profile derived from an experimental sample average profile will provide a representative analytical descriptor so long as there are no unusually large variations in the average backscatter cross‐section σb(z;F) over space scales comparable with layer thickness. At frequencies F where such variations are small, the constant σ(F) in the model may be identified w... |
