Popis: | There are now approximately one million people on renal replacement therapy worldwide. In the current era of chronic noncommunicable disease, this number is set to double within the next decade. Patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) carry a significantly higher cardiovascular morbidity and mortality compared with the general population. This is because of the “uremic” cardiovascular factors (Table 12.1). The result is that there will be a growing number of ESRD patients being managed within the intensive care unit (ICU) setting.
