Fatigue crack growth under fluctuating tension between the temperatures 293 and 463 K has been investigated in the aluminium alloy RR58. Temperature has little effect in this range, and all data are best represented by d a d N =5.6×10 6 ( δK E ) 3.5 m/cycle where E is the unrelaxed modulus and ΔK the range of stress intensity. Comparisons with other published work are made to substantiate the modulus normalisation approach. In sheets of this thickness (1.64 mm) mean stress effects are small, and barely detectable on the conventional log ΔK vs. log d a /d N plot. Elimination of moisture from the environment reduces propagation rates by about a factor of two. |
