Popis: The anomalies in the audiofrequency compliances reported by Fitzgerald [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 32, 1270 (1960)] were searched for in vain. In particular, the measured shear compliances were independent of frequency and prestress within the experimental error of about 4% over a range of these variables within which Fitzgerald reported a variation of one to two orders of magnitude. The present technique involves a vibrating duplex reed; the biasing steady stress is of either piezoelectric or thermal origin. An extension of the common theory of the “bimetallic strip” to anisotropic materials is presented.
