This concluding chapter explores how the 2010 earthquake and cholera epidemic in Haiti amplified and exacerbated preexisting tendencies and patterns in international medical aid. The earthquake represents an event of unprecedented scope for Haiti, in terms of number of sudden deaths, damage to infrastructure, and the destruction and disruption of Haitian institutions. Response to the earthquake was also unprecedented, and highlighted the emergence of new forms of visibility and fundraising, such as donations by cell phone text message and through internet networking sites. Meanwhile, the cholera emergency in Haiti had already had major consequences for the country’s national stability, in particular given that the UN force assigned to stabilize the country was responsible for introducing the pathogen and for MINUSTAH’s (the UN Mission for the Stabilization of Haiti) presence in the country. Nevertheless, there are reasons for optimism when one considers that many of the basic demographic indicators used to measure a population’s health are improving in Haiti. |
