The fine structural characteristics of junctional complexes formed between endemic colon bacteria and mucosal epithelial cells are presented. The attachments are permanent and do not precede invasion of the mucosa by the bacteria. The mucosal cells do not exhibit inflammatory or degenerative responses which characterize similar junctions in the intestinal mucosa of other mammals. The morphological features of the junctional complexes closely resemble attachments between symbiotic bacteria and the surface of host protozoans. A highly organized arrangement of filaments in the junctional complex may originate from mucopolysaccharide filaments associated with the mucosal cell surface or from capsular material surrounding the bacterial cell. |
