Popis: The present study deals with the effect of malnutrition on the weekly acetylcholine content and the activities of its related enzymes in the first 21 days of age. Malnutrition during suckling was achieved by letting the pups suckle mothers fed low protein diet (4%), while in the control group, the mothers were fed a 16% protein diet. From 7 days of age the whole body, brain and cerebral cortex of the malnourished group weighed less than those of the control. The content of acetylcholine in the malnourished group was 40.7% of the control and the activities of choline acetyltransferase and acetylcholinesterase were, respectively, 68% and 47% of those of the controls. No differences were found before 21 days of age. The results show that neonatal malnutrition affects acetylcholine metabolism during suckling with detectable effects only at 21 days of life.
