The chenier marshes of southwestern Louisiana which adjoin the northern Gulf of Mexico contain many embedded lakes and the higher ridges from which the region derives its name. This region, along with the Mississippi delta to the east are being lost to the sea at an alarming rate. It has been estimated that Louisiana is losing approximately fifty square miles of its rich wetlands each year. Depleting factors include subsidence, coastal erosion, the dredging of access canals to oil/gas wells and levee containment of the major rivers. Accretion occurs as a result of inorganic sedimentation and decomposition of marsh plants. The research reported here concerns the measurement of sedimentation rates in the chenier region and evaluation of the materials, including pollutants, incorporated in the sediment over the last hundred years. |
