Postmortem examinations of patients who have died during or after a surgical procedure can be some of the most challenging cases faced by autopsy pathologists. Most deaths are the result of predictable natural causes. In a small number technical error has contributed to death while in others no definite cause of death is established. This chapter covers the purpose and value of a perioperative autopsy, the approach to the examination, and the interpretation of the findings, using the United Kingdom as a particular jurisdictional example. |
