Popis: Calcium-dependent neurotoxicity plays a key role in stroke and head injury. Ischemia and/or anoxia cause excessive release of excitatory amino acids. Following glutamate receptors' overactivity, a rise in [Ca2+]i triggers neuronal and glial cell death by necrosis and/or apoptosis. Therapeutically, excitatory amino acid receptor blockade has proved to be a failure.
