1. 1. 131I-labelled human serum albumin was used as a marker for estimating trapped fluid in sedimented Ehrlich ascites tumour cells. Some very high values suggested that the protein could he taken up by the cells. 2. 2. Experiments to test for protein uptake showed that the albumin could be taken up by the cells to a small extent in vitro, but did not penetrate the cells when injected into the ascitic fluid of the mouse in vivo. 3. 3. These results are consistent with our previous observations that in these cells visible membrane activity, which could be the mechanism of uptake, is a phenomenon confined to deteriorating cells. |
