Popis: This repo contains the necessary elements to reproduce a data paper manuscript submitted to the Knowledge and Management of Aquatic Ecosystems Journal, including: the raw and processed data R functions script R Markdown files for data data processing and manuscript .docx file production bibliograhic file assets to illustrate the paper The project has a Gitlab repo: https://gitlab.ofb.fr/pascal.irz1/aspe_data_paper. The data presented here cover decades of electrofishing surveys in France, initially for local purposes, then also for the monitoring of river systems. Despite changes in field protocols and sampling site locations, e.g. to comply with the European Water Framework Directive (WFD, directive 2000/60/EC), the ASPE database offers a unique set of ~50 000 georeferenced standardised sampling surveys throughout mainland France. Catches are identified to the species and counted. Length and weight are available individually or by batch. Additional information encompass habitat features as well as 'river health' assessment by two fish-based indices. Though aiming at fish, the surveys also report crayfish. Tens of studies have been published upon these data, mainly on macroecology, population biology and bioassessment. However, we believe much more knowledge can be gained from the database in fields such as population dynamics and conservation, and by joining it to complementary datasets on other taxa, anthropogenic pressures or water quality. An API is being developed that should improve access to the data in the future, and R packages are proposed to foster analysis and data visualisation.
