Popis: cis-1,4-Polybutadiene and nitrile rubbers were functionalised with chlorohydrin groups up to levels of 10 mol-% in a two-stage process. In the first stage epoxide groups were introduced by reaction of the rubber with m-chloroperbenzoic acid and in the second stage the epoxide ring was opened by reaction with hydrochloric acid to yield chlorohydrin groups. Both steps in the process are clean and virtually quantitative. Graft chains of poly(tetrahydrofuran) were introduced by coupling the hydroxyl groups with living poly(tetrahydrofuran) cations. The lengths of the graft chains were determined by the time between initiation (by the action of silver perchlorate on ethyl bromide in tetrahydrofuran solution) and the coupling step with the functionalised rubber.
