Popis: Establishing the diagnosis of hypertension requires repeated measurements over time, and consideration should be given in many patients to obtaining out-of-office readings with ambulatory or home blood pressure monitoring to rule out the white coat effect. New methods such as unobserved automated office blood pressure measurement give different information to standard office blood pressure measurement, and care needs to be taken to take note of the different blood pressure cut-offs for different measurement techniques. Clinical investigations in newly diagnosed hypertensive patients should be undertaken to seek evidence of end-organ damage, and appropriate patients should be screened for secondary causes. Patients should also be assessed for other cardiovascular risk factors to form an overall risk profile and help plan appropriate and holistic cardiovascular treatment.
