Photoreduction of H2PtCl6 in FSM-16 (5 wt% Pt) in the presence of water/2-propanol vapors led to the formation of Pt nanowires in the mesoporous channels (pore size 2.7 nm). In contrast H2-reduction of H2PtCl6/FSM-16 at 673 K gave Pt nanoparticles in FSM-16. TEM and electron diffraction show that the nanowires have diameters of ca. 3 nm identical to the pore size and lengths ranging from 50 to 600 nm, and that the nanowires consist of crystalline Pt. In the formation mechanism of nanowires, Pt nanoparticles are initially formed in the mesopores and Pt ions are reduced on the surface of the particles to grow nanowires. XANES and XPS indicate that the Pt nanowires are slightly electron-deficient compared to the nanoparticles, suggesting the interaction with inner surface of FSM-16 pore. The Pt nanowire/FSM-16 exhibits catalytic, activities higher than those of the nanoparticle/FSM-16 in water-gas-shift reaction and hydrogenolysis of butane. The nanowires were extracted from the mesopores using [NBu4]Cl in benzene/ethanol. |
