Illness is the great leveler of men. It exposes their fears, insecurities, and dependencies. This chapter is concerned with the emotional disturbance that affects patients with serious disease. Such a disturbance may be the result of the patient’s fear of death, incapacity, or pain and suffering. It is a misfortune when these disturbances arise needlessly from incorrect ideas about the future course of the disease. A grave prognosis may have been given in error by the doctor or misinterpreted by the patient; or perhaps the patient has a pessimistic conception of the outlook quite unknown to the doctor who therefore cannot correct it. |
