Popis: This chapter provides an in-depth overview of the epidemiology and pathogenesis of osteoarthritis first and then pays special attention to osteoarthritis as it pertains to the hip (and knee) as a point of reference. The literature regarding care for hip pathologies, including osteoarthritis, is rapidly evolving and is currently a subject of particular interest within the orthopedic literature. This chapter presents the epidemiology, etiology, pathogenesis, recommended grading systems, treatment paradigms progressing from “conservative” measures to joint replacement techniques, postoperative care, and surgical outcomes relevant to the hip (and knee). The focus is on the hip with the knee joint frequently referenced throughout the chapter as a point of comparison, as there is frequent overlap in the literature regarding the hip and the knee. High-yield pertinent information regarding both the hip and knee is provided that the practitioner should find very useful. We hope that you find it enjoyable and informative!
