This chapter provides an in-depth overview of the epidemiology and pathogenesis of osteoarthritis first and then pays special attention to osteoarthritis as it pertains to the hip (and knee) as a point of reference. The literature regarding care for hip pathologies, including osteoarthritis, is rapidly evolving and is currently a subject of particular interest within the orthopedic literature. This chapter presents the epidemiology, etiology, pathogenesis, recommended grading systems, treatment paradigms progressing from “conservative” measures to joint replacement techniques, postoperative care, and surgical outcomes relevant to the hip (and knee).
