Popis: | Intraoperative radiation treatment (IORT) is the application of radiation directly to the residual tumor or tumor bed during surgery, after the surgical removal of the tumor. IORT has long been used to treat a variety of locally advanced and recurrent cancers. Studies have demonstrated that when used as a component of multidisciplinary treatment, IORT improves local control and survival for a number of tumors. IORT’s use in breast cancer treatment is more recent, but has shown a remarkable rate of adoption in the last decade, with more than 20,000 women receiving IORT treatment. For breast cancer, IORT can be used to provide either a precision boost to the tumor bed, replacing the traditional external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) boost, or as the only radiation treatment the patient will receive. This chapter will discuss the evolution of radiation treatment in breast cancer that has led to the rapid adoption of IORT, the rationale for its use, the various IORT approaches that have been employed, the clinical results of IORT treatment, and the future potential of IORT as it is applied to breast cancer. |
