Among the vast scope of phase-transfer catalysis (PTC) applications, the largest sector involves the reaction of anions that are reacted and/or generated under PTC conditions with species containing electrophilic centers. Among the most widespread and useful anions reacted under PTC conditions are those generated by deprotonation of “acidic” or “moderately acidic” organic compounds. PTC advantageously uses convenient, inexpensive, and relatively safe bases such as NaOH and K2CO3, instead of the classical organic alkoxides, amides and hydrides, to generate these anions. Approximately 40% of PTC patents involve the hydroxide ion and it has been estimated [1] that approximately 60% of commercial PTC applications involve the hydroxide ion. |
