Web and mobile technology platforms allow for the communication of health information to patients and consumers in novel ways, and largely outside of the health-care setting. Three projects conducted at HealthInsight between 2011 and 2014—a text messaging tool for diabetes self-management, a Web site that provides quality ratings for health-care providers, and disease-specific crowdsourced information from social media communities—provide insights into how consumers search for and utilize health information. This chapter describes the key lessons gleaned from research and experience in these areas, and highlights the practical and ethical challenges of communicating health information through technology platforms. Paramount among these lessons is the need to understand the nuances of the patient and consumer audience, and to consider how to best communicate health information that is aligned with their capacities, needs, and values. |
