Popis: Inpatient assessments evaluating the possible diagnoses of delirium or dementia often involve a team approach and can be considered complex, multifaceted processes. Identification and immediate attention to delirium is especially important, as it is a commonly underdiagnosed and potentially life-threatening disorder with numerous possible etiological contributors. Identification of delirium may be especially difficult when it manifests with its most prevalent, hypoactive subtype or when superimposed on another major neurocognitive disorder. A careful review of the patient's medical chart and a detailed history review, familiarity with dementia and delirium clinical features, and implementation of bedside screening assessments may facilitate diagnostic accuracy and appropriate treatment. This article reviews evidence-based bedside assessments for delirium and dementia as well as indications for more thorough neuropsychological testing. [ Psychiatr Ann . 2017;47(4):177–183.]
