With the changing scenario of the banking industry in the liberalized era, the importance of improved performance has assumed a critical significance for the viability of commercial banks operating in India. The objective of the present chapter is to get the financial performance score (one type of accounting figure) and ultimately, to rank the banking units in accordance with their performance. In order to achieve above objective, the present paper examines the inter-bank performance difference of banking sector with respect to profitability, productivity, cost efficiency and asset quality for the period of 11 years from 1999 to 2009. For each of the performance criteria, area specific performance index has been worked out based on twenty indicators, using factor analysis. The results show that there is a wide variation in performance among the banks according to their ownership pattern; however it is significant to note that in overall total performance, public sector banks increased their performance, as reflected in their ranking positions during the time period of study, foreign banks all always leading the Indian banking industry in terms of good performance showed by them. |
