The demand is increasing across the globe for energy due to the high-tech industrial automation, the increase in population and their high living standards. To fulfill the energy supply, researchers are looking for new techniques to harvest energy from various renewable energy sources. The prior investigations are based on developing the small-scale wind turbines for rural and urban localities. In the present paper, the effect of the thickness of an airfoil and the effect of the asymmetrical airfoil is examined by a computational fluid dynamic (CFD) approach. Five airfoils – NACA 0012, NACA 0018, NACA 0024, NREL S809, NACA 63-415 are considered in the analysis to measure the coefficient of performance with varying wind velocities It is observed that the performance of the wind turbine improves with an increase in airfoil thickness. The study shows that the asymmetric airfoil NREL S809 gives an overall good performance with regard to symmetric airfoil NACA 0012. |
