Popis: The very large amount of carbon dioxide generated from fossil fuel combustion causes a transient accumulation of CO 2 -concentration in the atmosphere, which may have a significant impact on the global climate. The deposition of CO 2 in the oceans has been suggested as a feasible method to eliminate this transient. This paper presents a study of the deposition of liquid CO 2 on the deep ocean (> 3000 m) sea floor, with emphasis on the chemical impact such deposition may have on the local biological environment at the deposition site, i.e. diffusion of CO 2 in sea water and associated local change of pH. The first part of this paper describes a dynamic, two-dimensional simulation model describing the system liquid CO 2 /sea water, while the second part describes a thermodynamic and chemical property database applied in the model. The model is designed with special considerations taken on flexibility and simulation speed. The objective of the work described in this paper is to develop and distribute a general computer “tool-box” for studies of liquid CO 2 deposited in deep oceans. The simulation program is currently running under UNIX workstations and IBM compatible PCs, with possible porting to Macintosh computers in the future.
