Popis: | In a continuing effort to comply with Section 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended, Avon Park Air Force Range, Florida, conducted Phase II archaeological evaluation of three sites, 8HG880, 8HG881 and 8HG882, located along Kissimmee River. The evaluations were contracted through Air Combat Command, Langley AFB, Virginia, and Moody AFB, Georgia, and fieldwork was conducted in February of 2001. Prehistoric and historic period components are present at each site. Based on the results of the Phase II evaluations, the prehistoric components at two sites, Ft. Kissimmee South (8HG880) and Borrow Canal (8HG882), are recommended eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). At Ft. Kissimmee South (8HG880), buried cultural deposits occur 80 to 100 cm below surface, and include artifacts diagnostic of the Archaic period. At Borrow Canal (8HG882), buried cultural deposits occur 70 to 90 cm below surrface. Artifacts diagnostic of the Archaic period and the early and middle portions of the Woodland period were recovered from the site. In addition, two radiocarbon dates, 3090±40 BP and 3770±40 BP, were returned on buried organic material associated with ceramic artifacts. The historical components at these two sites are recommended not eligible. At the third site, Kissimmee Landing (8HG881), both the prehistoric and historic period components are recommended not eligible for the NRHP. The upper strata across much of the site were disturbed by road construction and modifications to the Kissimmee River channel. In addition, there was little evidence of buried cultural deposition, and there were few diagnostic artifacts present. |
