Blood plasma viscosity has been measured at approximately 27 °C in twenty four sickle-cell (Hb.SS) and ten normal (Hb.AA) subjects using a capillary technique. Fourteen of the subjects with sickle-cell anaemia were in the pre-crises state while the remaining ten were already in crises. High values of plasma viscosity were found in the sickle-cell (crises) group (mean=1.71 ± 0.07 cP) whereas the pre-crises group with a mean of 1.43 ± 0.05 cP did not show any significant difference in viscosity from normals (mean = 1.42 ± 0.08 cP). It is speculated that the raised plasma viscosity recorded in the sickle-cell crisis state may be due to a possible abnormal alteration in the plasma protein pattern at that state of the sickle-cell disease. |
