Co-polarized and cross-polarized radar characteristics were measured from different types of plant residue cover on the soil surface, resulting from various tillage treatments. A first-order model was developed that relates the radar backscatter coefficient to percent residue cover. Application of the model to the data indicates that percent residue cover can be estimated from radar backscatter if the type of crop is known. In addition, the optimal polarization combination needs to be chosen for maximizing the sensitivity. These results demonstrate the potential for remote measurement of crop residue using airborne radar sensors. An advantage of this technique is that it can function well independent of sunlight conditions. |
