In the western basin of Lake Geneva (Switzerland), recovery from eutrophication was monitored from the increased relative abundance of oligotrophic species (OS) in oligochaete communities. Mean abundance of OS, predicted from total phosphorus concentrations (TP) in the water, was used to identify the areas in which the recovery proceeded at the same pace in the water and in the sediment. Abundance of OS was negatively correlated with increased organic deposition (OD). Sampling areas in which recovery was delayed by an excess of OD were identified according to this relationship. Values of OS predicted from TP or OD can be used to interpret results from large-scale surveys of zoobenthos in terms of trophic state. |
