Popis: The interaction of nutrition and athletic performance is well documented (1-4). However, until recently, there has been no widely used, easy and reliable technique to enable athletes with little or no formal nutrition education and limited access to counseling to accurately monitor their diets. In addition, there is a need for a simplified approach to assessing, designing, and adhering to specific dietary strategies in athletic settings. The American Dietetic Association in conjunction with the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and the U.S. Public Health Service originally developed such an instrument, the ADA exchange list (5). The revised version of this exchange list (6) is currently employed in the dietary management of diabetes but has not been extensively used by the nondiabetic population. Therefore, we investigated the efficacy of the ADA exchange list in enabling recreational runners to self-monitor their intake of fats, carbohydrates, and proteins and to adhere to specific diet regimens. Eight healthy, physically active males (24 ± 4 yr; 176.4 ± 4.7 cm; 68.0 ± 4.1 kg, mean ± SD) participated in the investigation. None of the participants had any previous nutritional training. All participants completed a medical history and screening form before beginning the study. We followed informed consent procedures (Note 1).
