Degradation of poly(glutamic acid-co-tyrosine) in the solid state by gamma-radiation at 77 and 303 K

Popis: The degradation of poly-L-glutamic acid, two copolymers of L-glutamic acid and L-tyrosine and poly-L-tyrosine by γ-radation at 77 and 303 K has been investigated. The volatile radiolysis products and their yields have been measured at 303 K and the radical intermediates have been identified at 77 and 303 k, and the radical yields determined from ESR spectra. The scission and crosslinking yields have been determined from molecular weight measurements by gel permeation chromatography. The tyrosine residues in the copolymers lead to reduced yields of volatile products, radical intermediates and scission as a result of the protective effect of these aromatic units.
