Popis: 360 million people live in the countries of the European Union, about 10% of them may be regarded as disabled persons. Technical aids play a great part in their autonomy and encourage access to the work world and to leisure. The standardisation of technical aids allows to improve the usability, user's safety and comfort and aims at saving money by a serial production. The international and European technical committes “prosthesis and orthosis” and “technical aids for disabled people” draw up terminology and testing standards. The liaisons of work avoid any useless duplication of work and render the transformation of international standards in European standards. Safety and reinforcement of product quality are the axes of work for the next years. An important effort has to be made for the standardization of communication aids. Diverse European studies point out the reinforcement of final user's influence, and the improvement of coordination between research and standardization. The needs of elderly and/or disabled persons must become a preoccupation for all the actors of standardization, as well as environmental or hygiene and safety problems.
