Evidence is accumulating for an involvement of central dopamine systems (6,12) in the regulation of blood pressure and development of hypertension. Central injection of dopamine agonists induced a decrease in blood pressure (1,7). Depletion of brain dopamine attenuated the development of hypertension in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) (13,14). Changes were described in central dopamine transmission in SHR when compared to their normotensive controls, the wistar-Kyoto rats (WKY) (15,17). To further study the cardiovascular role of brain dopamine systems, we electrically stimulated the ventral tegmental A10 dopamine system in the rat and investigated the effects on blood pressure and heart rate. |
