Popis: Due to differences in metabolism and body composition, older people are more susceptible to the effects of alcohol consumption compared to younger age groups. Physiological changes from the aging process may mediate the effects of alcohol in the health and well-being of elderly people. There is a close relationship between the health, social, economic, and living circumstances of older people and the pattern of alcohol consumption. Genetics also play an important role in the development of alcohol abuse and dependence and on health-related consequences. This chapter will detail some of the issues associated with alcohol including the body’s metabolism of it, recommended intakes, categories of drinking consumer (e.g., moderate vs. heavy drinking), health benefits of consumption, as well as discuss some of the gaps in research and future directions.
