The isotope identification and the β-decay chain analysis at the fission product separator 'JOSEF'

Popis: The new gas filled separator for fission products JOSEF has a considerably higher resolution than any older isotope separator of this type. A mass resolution of A / ΔA = 79 and a nuclear charge resolution of Z / ΔZ = 38 have been measured for the light fission product group. Unambiguous identification of unknown nuclei with masses up to A = 150 is possible. The resolution is high enough to determine fission yields and to reveal isomeric states in fission products by making use of the separation according to the mass and nuclear charge. The results suggest an extended application of gas filled separators for the investigation of the heavy products also of nuclear reactions other than fission.
