Popis: | The phenomenon of vertical and hierarchical occupational segregation, despite attenuation within all organizations, still shows withstand within the health sector, which is apparently structured in accordance with the principles of gender equality. In the medical profession, and in it some traditionally male specialties, as well as the chief role across all specialties, significant inequalities are still present in career opportunities for men and women. The steady increase in women enrolled in the degree course in medicine and surgery and of female graduates has not eliminated the under-represented gender in certain specialties and the almost complete absence of women in chiefs roles. Through secondary data from institutional sources and interviews with female doctors from two cohorts (the pioneers and marathoners) we have investigated the constraints and opportunities for careers in health care organizations, with particular attention to for recruitment and promotion criteria and the interference effects between family and professional life. |
