Popis: The fluorescence of neat alkylnaphthalene liquids is quenched to varying degrees by the addition of 16 organic compounds. Rate constants for the quenching (kq) have been calculated using the intrinsic fluorescence lifetime reported previously by Birks and King. For the series of quenchers, the rate constant appears to increase as increasing amounts of charge are transferred to or from the alkylnaphthalene. A limiting maximum of kq = 45 × 109 (M·sec)−1 is obtained. This may be interpreted to mean that the migration of energy through liquid alkylnaphthalenes occurs in jumps of 4.5 A every 4 × 10−12 sec.
