A Report on the Effect of Fasting and Transportation on Liveweight Losses, Carcass Weight Losses and Heat Production Measures of Slaughter Hogs

Popis: SLAUGHTER weight hogs held off feed and water for 24, 48, and 72 h lost 3.08 kg, 5.72 kg and 7.35 kg of live weight, respectively. Transporting the hogs 700 km and then holding them for the remainder of the 24, 48 and 72 h fasting period increased the live weight loss to 4.35 kg, 6.80 kg, and 9.21 kg, respectively. Losses in carcass weight ranged from 26.5 to 34.9% of the live weight losses in the fasted hogs and from 41.7 to 50.3% of the live weight losses for the hogs transported and fasted.
